Strategy: Phantasm Edit

Strength: Phantasm Edit

The Phantasm's main asset is its intangibility: unlike most minions it does not block the movement of your champions, letting them move out and start attacking much faster. A Rook with a Phantasm in front is a powerful threat right from turn 1. Bishops are especially tricky, since you can give them an attack route with a Phantasm to let them threaten a long diagonal that very few units can counterattack through. However, don't overlook the Phantasm itself! Being able to attack in 4 directions is quite strong for a minion and it can get around very quickly too, with its teleportation at three range. Compared to Ghost, the only other minion that doesn't block movement, it also has more mobility.

Weakness: Phantasm Edit

The Phantasm's intangible nature is a double-edged sword: you cannot use it for blocking and a formation with Phantasms in it also lets enemy pieces attack straight into your back row. Watch out for attacks from angles you don't have covered. Make sure that your other champions can cover the holes a Phantasm leaves, and be careful about putting expensive pieces behind them: having a Queen with an opening at the start sounds great, until you run into an opponent with a Rook in the same file.

The Phantasm is also very expensive for a piece whose main purpose is to let your champions move out quickly. You can use the Phantasm more aggressively to try to get your money's worth, but the Phantasm's movement is very unwieldy. It can be very hard for the Phantasm to keep up with moving targets, especially without any upgrades (which raise the Phantasm's cost even higher!) At all levels, Phantasm is vulnerable to diagonal attacks, a serious drawback.
